Pillar 4 · Chapter
Making Your Website Readable to AI
Whether AI engines can actually read your website, what commonly blocks them, and what to fix (or rebuild) so they can.
Is my website even readable to AI?
Possibly not, even if it looks perfect to you. Most AI crawlers can't execute JavaScript, so what they read can differ wildly from what your visitors see. Here is how to check in ten minutes.
Do I need to rebuild my website for AI, or can I fix what I have?
Most sites are fixable, some are money pits, and the deciding factor is rarely age. Triage on three questions: can machines read it, can you change it, and is the content worth reading.
What makes a website show up in AI answers?
Five on-page properties decide it: extractable answers, evidence density, machine-legible identity, freshness, and reachable rendering. All five are buildable on a normal business website.
Squarespace vs. WordPress vs. Custom: What's Best for AI Search?
All three can be readable; they differ in ceiling and control. Site builders trade ceiling for ease, WordPress can be excellent and usually isn't, and an owned custom codebase wins the era, at a newly affordable price.
Why a Beautiful Website Can Still Be Invisible to AI
Design and machine-readability are different layers, and excellence in one says nothing about the other. The prettiest failure modes: content locked in JavaScript, meaning locked in images, and copy that answers nothing.
